Stop getting super shaky footage with your GoPro by holding the camera straight on the housing. Instead, make a handle using an old paint roller you probably have laying around the house.

Parts you’ll need to make a DIY GoPro handle:

  • Paint roller handle
  • GoPro Tripod Mount
  • 1/4-20 bolt, 1.5″ long
  • 1/4″ washers and nut
  • Tools you’ll need:

    • Metal saw
    • Hammer
    • Cutting pliers
    • Screwdriver
    • 1/4″ socket and ratchet

This was cheap and easy, but made a big difference in my hand held everyday type shots.

Does this handle transfer hand movement on it to the camera via the mic or does this isolate the camera mic from your hand moving on the handle?

It definitely helps a lot, if not eliminates it completely.

I did this using a bolt and one piece of the three way arm. Then I can hold it sideways.

You guys should make a video about using a broomstick with this handle! :)

A note on this build…I had to trim a significant amount of plastic off from the head of my paint roller after hammering out the rest of the roller portion. The top was too thick so I either needed a longer bolt or I needed to cut off a portion of the top. Other than that it worked great! Thanks for the video!

Great idea. This doesn’t work as shown with Home Depot rollers but it can be made to work with only the bolt (no room for the nut). Only risk I see is that the HD version lacks the bolt increasing the risk it will come off.

Awesome idea will be stopping for a roller tonight… Had an Idea to add to it… What IF the handle was filled with Great stuff or similar foam? Thinking float-ability… Something I will give a try when I get mine built… Thanks for the great idea and simple cheap alternative to the more expensive name brands… Love this group!

I just built this and found the 1.5″ bolt a little short, maybe i used too thick washers. Todd B, I liked your comment about making a bouyant handle and with that in mind, bought a $.60 rubber plug that jams nicely up into the bottom of the handle. I haven’t tried floating it yet, but I have a feeling it will work
